About 450 Fullerton residents turned out for a meeting Tuesday to learn more about Chevron Land and Development Co.'s proposal to build 760 homes on 510 acres in West Coyote Hills.

Plans call for fewer homes than the area's 1977 master plan allows and include 279 acres of natural habitat. But some residents are pushing for the land to remain open space.

Friends of Coyote Hills, a preservation group formed two years ago, is looking for private funding to buy the land and is hoping the city will help.
