Summer provide Coyote Hills with a profusion of color; carmine monkey flowers and black sage crowd the slopes with spots of red and violet, along with coastal prickly pear, orange deer plant, and purple Fern-leaved phaecelia.
As spring wanes and summer comes around one hears the songs and calls of a multitude of nesting birds like the Bewick’s Wrens, song sparrows, orange-crowned warblers, and goldfinches. The rare California gnatcatchers call out in the early mornings, while at dusk brush rabbits come out to forage and the coyotes sing in celebration of the new season.
It’s a moderately easy 2 to 2 1/2 mile hike (with some uphill climbing) suitable for the entire family. It is a wonderful time to enjoy a walk in the West Coyote Hills – breathe in fresh air, soak up the sunshine and be out-of-doors. Doggies are welcome as long as they are on a leash.
